July 6 - Thousand Islands

After four days, we said good bye to Barbara, Suzanne, and Mary Lou in Syracuse and headed to the Patti Ann (boat) at the Brewerton Boatyard.  We wanted to try "boater homing".  Nothing better than sleeping with Patti Ann on the Patti Ann.  We slept on the boat on the trailer being very careful climbing up and down the swim platform ladder.

We unloaded our stuff from the truck onto the Patti Ann.  It's hard to imagine how much stuff can fit in that boat.  The trick is to be able to find it later.

And it was July 3rd in Brewerton - which was also fireworks night.  We like fireworks, but one of the side effects of getting more mature (older) is that we don't often drive to fireworks.  If they are right where we are, we like watching them.  And a lot of people celebrating the nation's summer anniversary.  A great summer tradition.

The next day we loaded up the truck and "moved to Beverly" (Clayton, NY).  The 1996 Chevy with the newly re-built Chevy big V8 engine pulled the boat to Clayton - about an hour and a half north.  No problem.  All it took was gas.

Trailering the boat to Clayton took a couple of hours.  Cruising the boat from Brewerton to Oswego and then Clayton, depending on weather, would take probably 3 or 4 days and more fuel than the truck.  The main advantage of trailering.  And we need to keep up our trailering skills.

Clayton is a great town.  We launched at the municipal marina on Mary Street.  No problem and the marina staff helped pull the boat off the trailer.  With the high water levels getting the boat in the water required putting the back wheels (and tail pipe) of the truck into the water.

Water levels are up  two or three feet due to heavy rains this year.  Some marinas and public docks are closed due to water levels.

Clayton is still a great town.  We stayed one night but got to sit and watch the sun set and walk around town.  Last year, our best friends in Somers Point NJ (Larry) and Ocean City NJ (Joan) visited us.  We missed them this year.

With the truck safely parked (we hope) in a town lot, we headed out from the Clayton dock to fill up with diesel fuel (ouch!) and then on to Ganaoque, Ontario.  On the way we stopped for lunch & a swim at Canoe Point State Park.  Beautiful, warm and sunny day.  The water looked really good.  We were ready to jump in and float for a while.  Wrong.  We don't know what the temperature was, but it was so cold that you could not even concentrate enough to pee in the water (not that we would ever do that).  And it felt great after we got out.

Then on to Gananoque.  We exercised our bikes and explored the town.  We're staying two nights and going to the Thousand Islands Playhouse tonight to see a musical - "Anne of Green Gables". An excellent production!

Today it is raining and about 80 degrees.  The plan is to ride the bikes to the grocery store to stock up.  Tomorrow Kingston, Ontario, maybe.

And back in Hampton Roads, Cambria and Michelle in her new dress from Greece.  Congratulations to Claiborn and Michelle. Beautiful girls & excellent (favorite) daddy/photographer.
